Are you dreaming of eloping in Italy? I don’t blame you! If the adventure and spectacular views are calling you, but you’re unsure how to elope in the Dolomites, you’ve come to the right place.

For a moment, picture you and your soulmate holding hands at the top of the mountains, breathing in the fresh air, and ready to commit to forever and ever. Is this how your fairytale starts?

In my Dolomites elopement guide, we will go over all the essential information for you to have an epic day. So let’s get into it!

A Little Bit Of History

The Dolomites are renowned for their iconic alpine sceneries in Europe. Formed from dolomitic limestone, these harsh, rugged peaks are a sight to behold. Tucked away in northern Italy, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

Once submerged under seas during the time of dinosaurs, today they stand majestically above us. They also witnessed battles during World War I between Italy and Austria — these mountains are full of intriguing history.

Pro tip: before you start learning basic Italian, now would be a good time to know that this region predominantly speaks German. Learning at least “hello” and “thank you” in German will be helpful during your stay.

How To Get To The Dolomites

Flying To The Dolomites

The mountain range is close to several other countries and without its own airport. However, there are a few ways to reach the Dolomites depending on which part of the mountain you’re visiting, and where you are flying from. Here are the closest ones:

  • Milan
  • Venice
  • Munich
  • Verona
  • Innsbruck

Transport Around The Dolomites

Getting around the Dolomites through public transport alone is possible, especially if you plan in advance and choose somewhere more touristy with good links. However, it could leave you feeling a little restricted.

There are buses around the popular areas, but you might have to wait a long time for transfers, so make sure to check timetables before traveling, especially after September.  Taxis are also available but can be an unnecessary expense.

Your easiest option would be to hire a car, which not only saves you time but also gives you the flexibility to travel at your own pace. The drive from Venice will take 2 to 3 hours, while the drive from Milan will take a slightly longer 5 hours. Both routes offer very scenic drives with lots to see and plenty of spots to take a break, before going into the mountains.

Tip 1: When planning your elopement, consider arriving 4-5 days early to account for any potential flight delays, cancellations, and jet lag. Depending on where you’re flying from there will be an 8-hour time difference. Ensuring you feel fresh and yourself on your special day key!

Tip 2: If you go to Venice, make sure to stop at Gelati Nico Venezia for delicious ice cream!

How To Get Married In The Dolomites

Good news! Getting married in Italy as a non-resident is possible but it takes a bit of prepping and planning. Both civil and Catholic ceremonies are recognized as legally binding in Italy but they need to be approved by the local mayor or deputy and each town is slightly different.

If you want to go down this route and get legally married in Italy, it’s best to contact your local Italian Consulate as they will help guide you. Make sure to submit your paperwork well in advance to ensure your wedding day is a stress-free event.

As a US citizen getting married in Italy, you’ll need:

  • Valid passport or ID cards
  • Original birth certificates
  • Divorce or death certificate if previously married
  • Obtain a Nulla Osta (certificate of no impediments) that you can request in the Consulate or Embassy of your country in Italy
  • An Atto Notorio signed by two witnesses
  • A declaration of marriage intent, submitted to the civil register

However, like many couples, if you think this is too much to get organized, consider doing all the legal paperwork in your hometown after you get back (or before your trip) and instead focus on cherishing a meaningful day with the person most important to you.

When To Elope In The Dolomites

One of the first things you’ll probably want to know is “What is the best month to elope in the Dolomites?”

Regardless of when you visit the Dolomites, you’ll be blessed with stunning landscapes — that’s a given. The iconic peaks and dramatic views will create a powerful backdrop as you marry your best friend.

However, the mountain changes rapidly with the season and the weather, which can be unpredictable. The key is to be prepared and research accessibility to make the most of getting married in the Italian Dolomites.

Winter Elopements In The Dolomites: December to April

Snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes, and enchanting backdrops – it’s not the most typical time to get married but absolutely breathtaking! It’s a great time for adventurous couples looking to incorporate winter sports into their day and break away from the busy elopement season in the Dolomites. However, not all locations will be open or accessible.

Winters can be rather unpredictable with temperatures known to get down to -10C so it’s essential to keep your wits about you and plan meticulously to not get anyone into potentially hazardous situations.

Even in the winter, a pair of sunglasses are essential. Dress in layers and pack warm, waterproof shoes with a good grip. When taking wedding photos in the Dolomites landscape, gloves and hats are useful for moving between photography locations.

Just imagine getting cozy by the fire in a mountain hut with a hot chocolate or even a glass of wine after your action-packed day. It would certainly be a story to tell the grandkids!

Spring Elopements In The Dolomites: May to June

During early spring, you’ll likely still see snow, with the cable cars closed and the higher mountains remaining inaccessible. However, by the end of June, the valleys begin to transform into lush green landscapes covered with fields of wildflowers.

Although this season is still a little unpredictable due to the weather, if you’re super open and flexible, it’s generally a great time to take advantage of the fewer crowds. Make the most of your spring elopement by coming towards the end of the season, although fewer trails are open, you’re also less likely to bump into others during your ceremony!

Summer Elopements In The Dolomites: July to August

By summer the snow has melted from higher elevations, the cable cars are operating, and the Rifugios (Italian mountain huts) are open for the hiking and camping season. It’s equally the most accessible, hottest, and busiest time to visit.

July and August are the peak seasons for travelers to this destination, bustling with tourists which may deter couples seeking an intimate occasion. One option could be to stay in a rifugio the night before and hike to the location, avoiding a long hike and promising gorgeous sunrise photos!

When planning a summer hiking elopement in the Dolomites, the key is to have an early start to beat the heat. Afterwards, you can spend the rest of the day however you choose.

Autumn Elopements In The Dolomites: September to October

The fall is a lovely time to elope in the Dolomites! The weather is calmer, the air is crisp with clear views across the terrain, and there are fewer tourists — it’s the perfect recipe for a romantic and intimate elopement by the mountains!

Not only is the weather milder but the alpine trees start changing to a wonderful golden hue, enchanting the scenery with epic views! I think it’s one of the best times to elope here, and as a Dolomites elopement photographer, it makes me so excited to capture the love couples share in this incredible setting!

How To Choose Where To Elope In The Dolomites

The best part of eloping is that there are no (wedding) rules. You don’t have to stick to a strict timeline or invite some distant relative you haven’t seen since you were a child. Elopements are all about the two of you, planning your perfect day down to the T!

Share your elopement daydreams together, discussing the type of activity you’d like to include as well as who you might invite (if any) to your day. Discussing these key elements with your partner can help narrow down your ideal elopement location.

The Dolomites cover a rather large area, so it can be tricky to know where to start your research if you’re unfamiliar! Whether you prefer fancy hotels, private Airbnbs, or cozy wooden huts, there are many options for your stay. If you’re thinking about where to elope in the Dolomites, here are a few places to consider:

  • Tre Cime di Lavaredo
  • Cortina d’Ampezzo
  • Pragser Wildsee
  • Giau Pass
  • Val Gardena
