When Sarah and Duke told me they wanted their engagement photos at Yankee Boy Basin, I couldn’t have been more excited. Not only is it one of my favorite places in all of Colorado, but it’s also where Duke proposed. It just made sense to go back to the place where their next chapter began.
That’s one of the things I love most about engagement sessions. They aren’t just about checking a box before the wedding or getting photos for your save-the-dates. They’re about telling your story. Whether that’s revisiting the place where you got engaged, hiking your favorite trail together, or spending an evening doing something you both genuinely love, those are the moments that create photographs you’ll cherish forever.
Why Yankee Boy Basin is One of Colorado’s Best Engagement Locations
Located about 30 minutes outside of Ouray, Yankee Boy Basin sits high in the San Juan Mountains and is easily one of the most breathtaking places you can experience in Colorado. The drive alone is worth making a day out of. As you wind your way up the mountain, you’ll pass waterfalls, old mining remnants, alpine streams, and viewpoints that seem to get better with every turn. Don’t rush to the top. Some of the best moments and some of my favorite photographs happen during those unexpected stops along the way.
Once you reach the basin, you’re surrounded by mountains in every direction. It’s one of those rare places where there really isn’t a bad view. No matter where you turn, you’re greeted by towering peaks, open alpine meadows, and endless opportunities to explore. It’s easy to see why this area has become such a favorite for adventurous couples.
Make Your Engagement Session Feel Like an Adventure
One of the biggest pieces of advice I give my couples is this: don’t treat your engagement session like a photoshoot. Treat it like a date.
Yankee Boy Basin is the perfect place to slow down and spend an entire day together. Rent a Jeep or an ATV in Ouray and explore the mountain roads. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch surrounded by wildflowers. Bring your dog along for the adventure. Stop wherever something catches your eye instead of worrying about sticking to a schedule.
Some of my favorite images happen during those in-between moments the laughs while driving with the windows down, walking hand in hand through the meadows, or simply sitting together taking in the view. Those moments feel real because they are real, and that’s exactly what I want your engagement session to capture.
The Best Time to Visit Yankee Boy Basin
If wildflowers are on your wish list, late June through August is generally the best time to visit. However, mountain conditions change every single year, and Mother Nature always has the final say.
For example, Sarah and Duke’s engagement session took place on July 20, 2026. Normally, I’d expect the wildflowers to still be putting on a spectacular show, but because Colorado experienced a particularly dry spring and early summer, many of the flowers had already bloomed and begun fading. Every season is different, so if you’re hoping for peak wildflowers, it’s always a good idea to stay flexible and keep an eye on current conditions.
Even without the flowers, though, Yankee Boy Basin is absolutely stunning. The dramatic mountain scenery is what truly makes this place unforgettable.
Sunrise or Sunset?
I’ve photographed Yankee Boy Basin during both sunrise and sunset, and honestly, you can’t make a bad choice.
Sunrise offers crisp mountain air, soft light, and an incredible sense of peace. If you’re hoping to have the area mostly to yourselves, early mornings are hard to beat. Sunset, on the other hand, brings warm golden light that wraps around the San Juan Mountains and creates some of the most beautiful colors you’ll see all day. Personally, I lean toward sunset because of how the light interacts with the landscape, but either option will give you an unforgettable experience.
How difficult is the drive?
Do You Need a 4WD Vehicle?
The drive into Yankee Boy Basin is part of the adventure. The first portion of the road is manageable for most vehicles if you take it slow, but the farther you continue, the rougher it becomes. If you’re planning to explore beyond the main basin or want to reach the highest viewpoints, a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is highly recommended. If you don’t have one, don’t worry Ouray has several Jeep and ATV rental companies that make getting there part of the experience.

Once you’re up in Yankee Boy Basin, cell service becomes very limited or disappears altogether depending on your carrier. I always recommend downloading offline maps before leaving Ouray and making sure everyone in your group knows the meeting location ahead of time.

Yankee Boy Basin sits at a high elevation, and you’ll definitely notice it if you’re visiting from out of state. Drink plenty of water, eat before heading up the mountain, and give yourself time to adjust. Even walking a short distance can feel different when you’re above 11,000 feet.

One of the things I love about the San Juan Mountains is that no two evenings ever look the same. You can have sunshine one minute and a quick summer rain shower the next. I always tell couples to bring an extra jacket, wear layers, and embrace whatever the mountains decide to give us. Some of my favorite photographs have happened just after a storm rolled through.

Don’t Rush Back to Town
One piece of advice I’d give every couple is not to treat Yankee Boy Basin like a quick stop. Build an entire day around it.
Wake up early and grab coffee in Ouray before heading up the mountain. Stop every time you see a view that makes you say, “Whoa.” Pack a picnic. Bring a bottle of champagne. Watch the sunset instead of leaving as soon as the photos are over.
The best memories usually happen when you stop worrying about the schedule and simply enjoy being together.
Why It’s Also Perfect for an Elopement
While Yankee Boy Basin is an incredible engagement session location, it’s also one of my favorite places to recommend for couples planning an intimate Colorado elopement.
One of the biggest advantages is that, at the time of writing this, you don’t need a photography permit or ceremony permit here. That makes planning much simpler while still allowing you to exchange vows surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery Colorado has to offer.
One thing many couples don’t realize is that your ceremony doesn’t have to happen in the exact spot where your portraits are taken. One of my favorite ways to build an unforgettable experience is by starting the morning somewhere completely different.
Just outside of Ouray is one of my favorite hidden locations that almost no one knows about. I keep it tucked away because it’s one of those places that deserves to stay quiet. Picture starting your day before sunrise, wrapped up in blankets with a hot cup of coffee while the first light slowly spills across the mountains. It’s the perfect place for a private first look, reading your vows together without anyone around, or simply taking a few moments to soak it all in before heading up to Yankee Boy Basin for your ceremony and portraits.
It’s one of those experiences that isn’t about getting another photo. It’s about giving yourselves the chance to slow down and actually feel the day before it begins. Those quiet moments often become the memories couples talk about long after the wedding is over. From there, it’s an easy drive into Yankee Boy Basin where the scenery completely changes, giving you the best of both worlds an intimate, peaceful start to your day followed by one of Colorado’s most iconic mountain landscapes.
The area is also dog-friendly, as long as your furry friend stays on a leash, making it a wonderful option if your dog is an important part of your family. There’s even a restroom farther up the trail, which is helpful for couples spending the day exploring or bringing along a few guests for their ceremony.
When I photographed Sarah and Duke, I was surprised by how peaceful the basin felt. Even during the summer season, we had plenty of space to ourselves. If privacy is something you value, I highly recommend planning your session or elopement around sunrise or sunset when you’ll often have the area at its quietest.
Why I Keep Coming Back to the San Juan Mountains
I’ve photographed weddings and engagement sessions throughout Colorado, but the San Juan Mountains continue to pull me back. There’s something about these mountains that feels different. They’re rugged, dramatic, and incredibly wild. Standing in the middle of Yankee Boy Basin has a way of making everything else feel small, and that’s one of the reasons I love bringing couples here.
These aren’t locations where you simply show up, smile at the camera, and leave. They’re places where you experience something together. You remember the drive, the mountain air, the laughter, and the feeling of standing in a place that seems almost too beautiful to be real. The photographs become a reminder of that entire experience, not just what you looked like that day.

One of the things I love most about planning adventure sessions and elopements in the San Juan Mountains is that there’s always more to discover than what you see on Instagram. Of course, there are the well-known locations everyone talks about, but there are also quiet overlooks, hidden meadows, peaceful forests, and mountain roads that most visitors drive right past.
Some of my favorite moments don’t happen at the destination they happen in between. Stopping for coffee as the sun comes up, finding a hidden pull-off with a view all to yourselves, or taking the long way back because another mountain pass caught your eye. If you’re planning an engagement session or elopement in the San Juan Mountains, don’t rush the experience. Spend the extra hour watching the sunrise. Stop for coffee on the side of the road. Take the scenic route. Explore the trails you weren’t planning to explore. Years from now, those are the moments you’ll remember just as much as the photographs.
